Andrew Hurley translations the ones in the black and blue volume were ripped apart when the book came out, but I think part of that stemmed from antagonisms between Borges literary acquaintances and his widow. She pulled all the existing translations from print and commissioned these new ones also of his poetry and non fiction which annoyingly broke up the volumes in which Borges had originally published them, and reassembled them into these three new ones stupid, given how much Borges liked to efface the line between fiction and non fiction. And then aside from that there are some obvious incompetencies in Hurley translation things like this: sometimes Borges would use identical wording for a line or a paragraph in two different stories. Hurley didn pick up on this, translated them differently, and so removed various internal links in Borges writing. But mostly the problems come from (I think) slipshod and quick work. I don think Hurley has a bad feel for English, and since I got to know the bulk of Borges fiction through his work, I remain partial to his wording in many cases. I definitely know passages where I think his wording is clearly superior to the old version (but I don have my copies handy). The excoriation of those translations stemmed, at least in part, from personal issues among people in Borges circles Alberto Manguel, for example.
